Sue and JillAfter months of planning and advertising finally the royal Wedding Day arrived. During the previous week Lesley decorated the church with a unique and stunning display of wedding dresses that caused lots of ‘WOWS’. Jenny baked a beautiful 3 tier wedding cake and in an atmosphere of fun and laughter we hung bunting, blew up over a hundred balloons, assembled tables, and collected equipment from around the Island. Another prayer answered, the promised showers didn’t happen, instead the sun shone all day.

Before 8AM Techno John worked flat out making sure the TV coverage and sound was perfect. He was followed closely by Warren and Co running round setting up tables, gazebo’s, outside PA,  BBQ’s, and arranging the hall for the kids to watch  ‘Despicable Me’ [much better than a boring wedding if your only 8].

Gradually people of all ages and families from the estate arrived to watch the wedding. We served freshly brewed coffee, tea, squash and nibbles constantly all day to 80 - 100 adults and 34 delightful students from Germany, plus lots of children.

The wedding service was watched by a packed church. After the National Anthem we served Bucks Fizz. Betty from our Wednesday Drop-In won the Posh Hat competition judged by local Authority Councillor, Lora Peacy Wilcox. Sandwiches and over 200 cakes were set out for the Street Party.  Our wedding cake was cut by another Drop-In member Joyce with Techno John’s help. Carl and Co cooked burgers and hot dogs all afternoon to the sound of 80’s music. The outdoor games including Sumo Suit wrestling, a bouncy castle and getting soaked in old fashioned stocks were very popular.

Th Royal WeddingThe whole day was another ‘I can’t believe it’ moment when Team Apex was at its best, working hard constantly throughout the day, even the church and hall was thoroughly swept.

We had loads of positive feedback from the general public. Visitors were surprised we didn’t charge. Many wanted to donate to a charity. We collected £60 for Light for Bulgaria.

Our Apex family went home happily exhausted and grateful; knowing we’d met several of our immediate St. Faith’s neighbours and satisfied we’d served the community well.
